You know the feeling that often comes Monday morning: The deal that should have closed did not. The hire you needed is not coming. The report lands short, and you are the one who has to explain why.
In moments like these, most of us carry a fixed picture of how God should provide. We want the clean fix, the obvious open door, the answer that shows up on our calendar and in our currency. When His help arrives in a different form, or in a quieter way, we start to wonder if He is paying attention at all. Some weeks, our expectation of what God should do weighs heavier on us than the problem itself.
That is why the biblical story of what Jesus did at the wedding in Cana (John 2:1-11) deserves a second look. The wine runs out. To us, that reads like a catering hiccup. In that culture, however, it was public shame, a stain on the host’s honor that the family would carry for years. Into that failure, Jesus moves quietly. He tells the servants to fill six stone jars with water. No speech. No spotlight. But when the master of the feast tastes the result, he is stunned and pulls the bridegroom aside: “Everyone serves the good wine first…but you have kept the good wine until now” (John 2:10).
Jesus does not patch the problem. He overwhelms it. He gives the good wine; the vintage that makes a host proud, the kind guests still talk about on the way home. He takes ordinary water, and out of it makes the finest wine in the room, poured by the Author of every good gift.
Notice the reversal. The world runs its provision one way, whether it is wine or something else: It pours its best at the start and leaves you nursing the dregs by the end. God keeps the good wine for the hour you will need it most. His gifts do not arrive “almost-enough.” When He acts, the Lord acts with a fullness fitted to the moment, even when we cannot see how it fits at first.
Here is where our hearts dig in. We have already drawn the timeline. I have done it more times than I would like to count over the years. We decide what the answer should look like and when it should land. So, when God’s provision refuses our script, we assume something is missing. The lack is not in what He gives. It is in our line of sight. What He hands us is never merely workable. It is excellent, although we might only taste and recognize the fullness later.
This can change how you perceive your Monday. A delayed opportunity can feel like a closed door while it is actually God answering a prayer you did not know to pray. A quiet word from a colleague can outlast the dramatic breakthrough you were hoping for. Even His “no,” even His “not yet,” can be mercy doing His precise work.
Your situation may not look like a miracle this morning. It may feel unfinished and unclear. The same Jesus Who turned six stone jars of water into the best wine in the room is preparing His provision for you with that same care. His supply is always the good vintage: right in quality, right in timing, shaped for a purpose you will understand once your perspective catches up. Let that steady your hands as you step into the work ahead today and this week.

Reflection/Discussion Questions
- Where in your work right now are you waiting on God to provide, and in what form have you already decided His answer should take? How might that fixed picture be keeping you from being able to see what He is already doing?
- The master of the feast in the account of the wedding in Cana was stunned that the best wine came last. Where have you seen God’s good wine arrive later than you wanted – and better than you expected? What did that teach you about His timing?
- Jesus told the servants to fill six stone jars with water when what the room needed was wine. They obeyed an instruction that had nothing obvious to do with the problem, and they became the only ones in the room who knew where the miracle came from. What ordinary, unglamorous task is in front of you this week that you have been discounting because it does not look like the answer you are waiting for?
- The devotional says the lack, our shortcoming, is usually in our line of sight, not in God’s provision. What would change about how you lead, make decisions, or wait this week if you truly believed His supply is always the good vintage, provided at the right time?
NOTE: If you have a Bible and would like to read more about the principles discussed this week, consider the following passages:
Psalm 84:11; Ecclesiastes 3:11; John 2:1-11; Philippians 4:19; James 1:17
This Week’s Challenge
Name the one situation at work you have quietly been regarding as God’s absence: the stalled deal, the closed door, the answer that has not come. Before you open your laptop each morning, bring that concern to Him in prayer and ask for the faith to trust that He is preparing the “good wine,” even if you cannot taste it yet.
At the end of the week, write down one way God’s provision showed up in a form you did not expect or anticipate. Then thank Him for it. Maybe you can share this with a friend, mentor, or your CBMC group to encourage them as well.
